Winter Writing Activity - The Story of a Snowflake - Grades 3-5

In this narrative nonfiction writing activity, students will write a book from the perspective of a snowflake! Their story begins as a raindrop, travels through the water cycle stages, and ends with the snowflake falling gracefully from the sky. But don't worry, your writers will reassure readers that the snowflake will continue the cycle again and again!

This is a fun, creative and informative writing activity for winter, and a great interactive display idea for your bulletin board! It also hits several Writing standards across grades 3-5 ...#score

Students will love taking on the voice of a snowflake, it will inspire even your most reluctant writers to pick up their pencil and write!

Important Note: Students will need to understand the water cycle and be able to use the scientific terms correctly (ex: precipitation, condensation, water vapor, etc.). They will also need to know how a snowflake forms. There are lots of informational resources out there to teach about the water cycle! This project works best when students have already learned this concept.

Pages Included:

Title Page

Zoom In: The Back Story (x2)

Zoom In: A Snowflake Forms

Zoom In: Life in the Cloud

Zoom In: It's Go Time!

Conclusion: What Happens Next?

All pages include specific directions, a checklist of “Things to Consider” and a suggested range of sentences. This makes it easy for students at all levels to work independently! They will have to "zoom in" on specific parts of the topic, challenging them to SHOW the reader, not tell. If your students need more space, simply print out another copy of the page needed and they can attach it into their book.

My books are set up with the writing on the right side of the page, and an illustration to match it drawn on the left. You can arrange yours however you prefer, or have your students choose how they want it set up!

A front and back cover page is included and can be printed on card stock paper for durability, if preferred!

Use this activity during your writing block, it works well with a writing workshop model. Or have students complete it during centers. I suggest beginning with a brainstorm of a snowflake (looks like, sounds like, feels like), as well as the scientific terms used to describe the water cycle. I know this will quickly become a favorite activity that you use year after year!
