Winter Writing Menu

Need a new Winter writing activity that is easy to differentiate and accomplishes several genres of writing? You’ve come to the right place!

Oh Mylanta--this is my favorite thing to do with my students when it comes to writing. All year we practice with prompts that come from our state's standardized test list, but this one does so much more. It gives them a choice of different styles of writing, and also a bunch of different topics--all with a theme!

This is a "Writing Menu" from which students choose a couple of prompts, but all from different columns. The menu allows them to choose a prompt, topic, and writing style or genre and also gives them parameters for length and content. It keeps them writing about something that interests them while allowing you to see their writing abilities in different areas.

This "Winter Writing Menu" is winter-themed, obviously, but it is also non-denominational. It has prompts that allow students to relate using their own culture, religion, and traditions, and also some prompts that center around snow, winter activities, and folklore. So much to choose from!

Included are what I call "Checklist Rubrics" that make grading a breeze--one for each genre or style of writing. They are all fully editable, and are designed to work with traditional and standards-based grading. The checklist style cuts your grading time in half while adding the benefit of giving the students the ability to pinpoint errors and adjust them themselves. Bonus!

Also included are some graphic organizers for body paragraphs from my shop!

So here's the rundown of what you get when you purchase this product:

  1. A Winter Writing Menu - featuring 20 different prompt to choose from in the genres of vocabulary, research, informational, creative, and persuasive writing
  2. 5 Checklist Rubrics - all fully editable
  3. Instructions for the lesson, editing, and grading
  4. Graphic Organizers for some of the writing genres
