This reading challenge could be undertaken by children of any age. The children choose 10 different reading activities to achieve over the holidays, they can even make up their own. When they have achieved each task, they cut out the relevant snowman and stick him on the wintry scene. When they return to school after the holiday, they are rewarded for their hard work.
I have been using reading challenges for the past 4 years in my class, with great success. They give a real purpose for reading. We have a school reward and a treat such as hot chocolate with marshmallows and squirty cream. It works well!
We also have a Spring Challenge in the Easter Holidays and a Summer Challenge given to my next class to complete before coming into my class in September.
