'Wise Owl's Moving Up' is an easy second grade reading workbook. It reviews the skills taught in the previous book, 'Wise Owl's Vowels and Sight Words'.
There are 16 lessons in this workbook. Each lesson has 6 to 7 pages. A new vowel chart, with dictionary pronunciation symbols for vowel sounds appears at the beginning of this workbook and is used in teaching all of the phonics lessons. All vowel sounds from the previous book are reviewed and three new vowel sounds are added: 'ea' as in 'bread', 'ie' as in 'chief' and 'ei' as in 'eight'.
Lessons 1 through Lesson 6 in this workbook will review some of the sight words from the book before this one. After the review of the sight words taught in the previous book, 50 new sight words will added, at the rate of 5 words per lesson. New sight words begin in Lesson 7.
Each 6-7 page lesson is more or less the same. It has three or four pages devoted to teaching a vowel sound and/or a word skill, like 'suffixes'. Those pages are followed by a page that introduces the new sight words and has activities to review the old ones. The story that follows the sight word page includes words with the new sound learned in the lesson and the new sight words. The child is given time to read the story silently first. After silent reading, the child reads the story aloud to the teacher, tutor, parent, or a classroom reading partner. The story page is always followed by a 'questions and activities' page. There is a supplemental workbook that goes along with this one called, "Wise Owl's Moving Up- Extra Practice Stories.
If you are new to my workbooks, I suggest using 'Wise Owl's Placement Test' to see if this is the right book for your student. The placement test is free at TPT.
