Wise Words is a collection of ten slides featuring inspirational quotes by famous people. On each slide is the actual quote along with a picture of the famous person.
Ideas for how to use slides:
1.Journal write: On selected days, start each class period showing one slide and have students respond to it, writing about what they think it means and how it applies to their life.
2.Beginning of year goal setting: show all ten slides to the students, have them select one. Group the students who selected the same quote and allow them to have a discussion about what they think the quote means. Then have students respond to the quote individually, writing about what it means and how they could use this advise to help them set personal and academic goals for the year.
3.Vision board: Have students make a vision board, selecting one of the quotes to place in the center of their board (this can be a digital board or a cut and paste board). Surrounding the quote should be images of things that relate to the quote and what they want to achieve in their personal life. Students can also research and use different quotes.
4.Novel /character study: After students read a class novel or free choice novel, have them choose a quote that either best characterizes one of the main characters or would be good advice for one of the main characters. This wild be an excellent “claim, textual evidence” writing assignment.
5.Research skills: Have students select a quote and gather research on the famous person who stated the quote. This could be a great activity for practicing with students how to effectively use online research tools to access information. Maybe even have students take notes on electronic note cards and create citations using tools such as NoodleTools.
