Looking for an intriguing VERSE NOVEL to mirror with similar themes to To Kill a Mockingbird or Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry? Look no further!
Witness is a verse novel written by Karen Hesse that takes place in 1924. I love it and use it in class when we don't have time to do To Kill a Mockingbird. It covers very similar items and is much shorter in length.
This is everything I do for the background research unit. All of the files are Word files except for the intro PPT.
Documents included in packet and the order they go in:
Research Intro and Notes Sheet:
Fill in the blank notes sheet that goes along with the research process. All of the examples are specific to the novel.
Handout for Info from Research & How to do Works Cited:
I have students staple this together. The info handout has them summarize the information from what they have to research. The topics are as follows: Roaring 20’s, prohibition, flapper, Leopold and Loeb, Jim Crow Laws, KKK. Then they have the option for Prices in 1924, Al Capone, and Inventions in the 1920’s if they’re interested.
The “How to do Works Cited” is a sheet that has an example of how to cite a webpage and then room for every citation.
List of Websites and Citations:
This sheet is for the teacher. It has a list of all the websites I use and the Works Cited Information. If you have limited technology, print off articles. That’s what I have to do.
Outline for Witness Research Paper:
An blank example outline for students to put their information.
Example Research Paper:
I do not have them use direct quotations in this paper, so they put the in text citation at the end of the paragraph. This example has an introduction and one body paragraph and is in MLA format.
Research Paper Rubric:
Point values are left blank. It has spaces for Intro, three body paragraphs, conclusion, Formatting & works cited.
