~Wizard of Oz Sight Word Game- Common Core Words~
This adorable game is for any kindergarten or first grade teacher who has a love for The Wizard of Oz. The game is focused on kindergarten level common core sight words; however, it could be used as a remedial teaching tool for older students who need assistance learning kindergarten words. This is a perfect teaching tool to use in a small group. Children love the game and don't even realize that they are learning in the process.
The game contains 36 cards in all, 24 of which contain sight words. Six cards are "ruby slipper" cards and 6 cards are "wicked witch" cards. To play the game, a small group or center group of up to 6 players turn all of the cards face down. Each player takes a turn flipping a card. If the card contains a sight word, the child reads the word aloud and keeps the card in his/her pile. If the card contains a ruby slipper, he or she can steal a sight word card from another player and add it to his/her pile. If the flipped card contains a wicked witch, the player loses all cards and must add them back into the main game pile. When a ruby slipper card or wicked witch card is turned over, those cards are removed from the main game pile and not placed back in the pile (you can place them back in the pile, but it makes for a very long game). The game is over when all cards have been turned over and played. The child with the most sight word cards at the end of the game is the winner.
The game is best played if the cards are either printed on cardstock and cut out or if the cards are printed on paper and laminated. This will prolong the life of the game cards!
