This is a package of 3 cryptogram puzzles in which students will decode an encrypted message using a letter/number key. Each cryptogram is about a famous woman in history, and upon solving the encryption, students will learn facts about that famous woman leader. These cryptograms have been created at three different levels for grades (1-2), 3, and (4-5). Famous women included are Bessie Coleman, Susan B. Anthony, and Ellen Ochoa.
Students love unraveling these encrypted messages, and often seek each other’s cooperation in unfolding the encryption. Since decoding the encrypted message demands a sharp focus, and the use of math and literacy skills, students work quietly and stay on task. This activity reinforces math and literacy skills, and builds curiosity and focus, as students want to get to the bottom of the hidden/encrypted message.
