This is one of my favorite lessons. I designed this lesson as the final stage of an interview process. I had to teach a 30-minute lesson on Women in the Civil War. With this lesson, I got the job.
The American Civil War was the first war to be photographed. I dug through the National Archives and the entire Civil War Reference section at my local library and gathered as many clear photographs of women taken during the American Civil War. I scanned and then had 8x10s printed up, and the students used a sheet with leading questions to be historians and infer the various roles of Women in the Civil War. This lesson can be lengthened or shortened to fit your needs.
