The Women’s History Literacy Set is a 92 page set filled with reading and writing activities which are engaging for 4th - 5th graders. There are 12 biography passages which target Main Idea, Text Evidence, Cause and Effect, Inferences, Close Reading, and Point of View. There are also practice pages with Context Clues, and Figurative Language. It also includes 32 mini-biography shades of meaning (vocabulary) task cards, a poetry activity, and a timeline activity for the computer!
This packet will help you integrate social studies and reading in your classroom and will help your students gain lots of new knowledge about important historical figures and events. I am so excited about this unit because it hits important reading standards while focusing on important women from history. With so many things to teach and time always such an issue in the classroom, it's a great way to combine social studies lessons as well as reading and writing skills. Plus, I think the material will be interesting and motivating for your kids!
The task cards include information about these famous (and not so famous) women:
Sally Ride, Anne Frank, Jane Goodall, Nellie Bly, Molly Pitcher, Margaret Thatcher, Harriet Tubman, Joan of Arc, Helen Keller, Marie Curie, Sacajawea, Rosa Parks, Mother Teresa, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Eleanor Roosevelt, Nellie Taylor Ross, Marian Anderson, Maya Angelou, Rachel Carson, Zora Neale Thurston, Billie Jean King, Sybil Ludington, Sonia Sotomayor, Ella Fitzgerald, Lucille Ball, Juliette Gordon Low, Martha Graham. Sarah Hale, J.K. Rowling, Frida Kahlo, and Mary Walker.
I really like the worksheets included. Besides being an excellent test prep tool, they describe so many important lives and explain the role each one played in history. These are stories that all children should know and can benefit from.
The Make a Timeline Activity is great to help students determine important information about an important woman, while helping them practice computer skills like website navigation, cut and paste and more!
Poetry is always a great way to incorporate writing throughout the year. The Important Thing Biography Poem is a nice culminating activity, if you do a full research report in your classroom, or it can also be used after completing one or more of the biographies from this set. Nice way to reinforce learning.
I hope you really like this literacy set and that it is something that will be meaningful for your students.
