This unit was created as a comprehensive introduction to Women's History and Suffrage in the United States. This unit creates connections between the suffrage and the abolition movements in the 1800's. Students are encouraged to look at rights available to women today that are often taken for granted and were not available before. Students are introduced to Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton as the "mothers" of the suffrage movement. The second generation of suffragists who were alive during the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 are also introduced. Students are taught suffrage through a holistic historical context by introducing important political figures and events prevalent at the time.
