SUBJECT: English, Language Arts, Novel Study
LEVEL: Upper Elementary, Middle School

A comprehensive and in-depth novel study for an incredible book. A favorite with both students and teachers, this novel makes for an excellent read aloud, but is also an engaging independent read that encourages reflection.

This package provides students with everything they need to complete a comprehensive novel study on Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Very little teacher prep is required – simply print and teach!

All activities are classroom tested, and include creative handouts, comprehension questions, answer keys, templates, and rubrics!

While all of the resources included in this package can be successfully used as-is, they work great when placed into an Interactive Notebook. Interactive Notebooks are powerful tools to enable students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers. Interactive Notebooks allow students to express their ideas in unique ways, and process information presented in class. Completed Interactive Notebooks become valuable study tools for students to reflect back on, and are great as a record of student progress over time.

This creative and engaging package includes the following:

Comprehension Questions: A complete set of comprehension questions for each of the eight parts of the novel. COMPLETE ANSWER KEY INCLUDED!!!

Vocabulary Words: A complete set of Vocabulary words for each of the eight parts of the novel.

Character Detail Foldable Library Pockets: Students create a library pocket style foldable describing the different characters in the novel. Students cut out, fold, and glue the library pocket together. Students then describe each character on the included lined paper sheet, and insert the sheet into the library pocket. The square with the character’s name gets glued on the front, with a student illustration of character. Students love this activity because it is hands on and different. Teachers love this activity because the completed library pockets are both beautiful and informative. A library pocket template for each of the main characters is included!

Elements of Literature Notes: No novel study is complete without information on the Elements of Literature. Several pages of information relating to each element (conflict, foreshadowing, etc.) are organized into an easy to read table. A blank student version is included. These notes can be applied to ANY novel or short story!

Illustrated Plot Diagram Project Use this for a final project for the unit! Students create a full color plot diagram, complete with illustrations from the story. A detailed template is included!!! This project is a great way to review key events from the novel, and make gorgeous wall displays!

Character Cube Project: Students create 3D cubes with information and illustrations about characters from the novel. Completed cubes can be hung from the classroom roof, or stacked to make an eye-catching classroom display!

What Would Your Character Do? Students choose a character from the novel and answer a set of “What If…?” questions. This activity really gets students thinking “outside of the box”!

The 5W’s: Students use the space provided on this handout to record information on a key scene in the novel, using the 5W’s of Who, What, Where, When, and Why.

Twenty Questions Activity: Students use this handout to create and answer 20 questions about the novel. A great test review activity!

Character Table: Students use this table to illustrate and describe different characters in the novel. As they read through the novel, students use the table to record important information about each character. There is also space for students to draw a picture of each character. A great tool for students to use to help keep all the characters straight!

Compare and Contrast Graphic Organizers: A set of 5 graphic organizers are included, for students to compare August to each of the main characters.

What Are They Thinking?: Students use these pages to infer what they think a character would think in a certain situation. Teachers can use these graphic organizers at any point in the story.
