In my classroom, we read the novel, Wonder, by R. J. Palacio. I have created this project for students to complete for extra credit if they saw the movie in the theaters. However, once the movie comes out on DVD (or can be rented/purchased online in some way), I will show it in my classroom and make this compare/contrast project a yearly requirement.
For this project, students will first list similarities and differences between the book and the movie. Then, they’ll choose the most important similarities and differences that they’d like to include in a compare/contrast essay.
Multiple graphic organizers are included to make this project a snap for students. A transition word list is also included to help students improve the clarity and overall sound of their writing.
I’ve included 4 rubrics, as well:
Rubric #1 - Out of 20 total points
Rubric #2 - Out of 50 total points
Rubric #3 - Point values are blank, you can fill them in!
Rubric #4 - Completely blank rubric, so you can decide what you want to grade.
NOTE: The writing pages included can be used for final copies or drafts. Personally, I let students type final copies in my classroom.
