This product includes 2 ways I incorporate a summative assessment for the book Wonder. It is assessing understanding of the book, character development, character traits, theme, and precept analysis.
1. Character Analysis/Theme with Wonder Faces
2. Precept Postcard
Provided are character faces for Auggie, Jack Will, Julian, Olivia, Summer, and Miranda. I have students pick 1 character to analyze as a summative assessment for their understanding of Wonder, character traits, character development, and theme.
Also included is a blank face for students to draw their own hair. Students analyze their own traits and a lesson they have learned from reading Wonder. Students then self-reflect on something they can change in their own life based on what they have learned from reading the book.
In all reflections, students are expeced to include specific examples from the book to support their ideas.
I have students complete this on a 5x7 inch index card so it feels more like a postcard. One side of the index card is the precept design. The other side is their reflection.
I allow students to choose a precept from the book on which to reflect deeper. However, I offer extra credit if they can provide their own life motto (precept) to do the postcard. While explaining the significance of this precept in their life, my students must also explain how 1 character from Wonder might also relate to this precept.
I love doing this after reading Wonder because I can make a “Choose Kind” bulletin board from the final products! The bulletin board asks, “Our words are powerful. What words do you live by?”
