Holiday Writing Activity: Are you reading the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio? If so, this holiday journal packet will be a fun compliment to your novel study. It's made especially for the holiday season.
Yes, kindness should be spread throughout the year, but this packet plays on the word WONDER to make a fun title of "It's a WONDERful time of year to choose kindness." The journal packet provides a connection between the holiday season and your book study, which deals with the topic of kindness. If you are like me, I love to connect the holidays to my December activities. This is just another opportunity.
This packet encourages character building while getting your students to reflect and write.
Please see the cover thumbnail so you can see that it has images that relate to the book as well as holiday images, such as a Christmas tree and gifts.
This journal includes the cover page and four other pages. Each of the four pages have 5 kindness statements/prompts. You can choose how many prompts you would like to have your students do. For example, if you want to only do it for 2 weeks, you would just have them staple the cover to two of the journal prompt pages. If you want them to do a prompt a day for 20 school days, you would have them do all four pages of prompts.
Please note that there is not a great deal of writing space. Students are asked to tell what the statements mean and also how they can apply it to their life. 5 prompts are included on each page. In my class we would do one prompt each day. It's perfect for morning work, a writing center, or during times when you have 5-10 minutes here or there. You can use it in your classroom however you would like.
On each page there are holiday images where students can write the number for the journal prompt. For example, on day one they would write a 1 in the shape and color the holiday image. You can also simply have the kids color the image without writing the number.
It is important to know that the kindness statements that students write about/reflect on are NOT from the book. They are simply statements about kindness. Here are a few:
Kindness begins with me.
One kind word can change someone's entire day.
No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.
Be kind whenever possible. It's always possible.
Every word matters. Speak kindly.
An added bonus is this makes a wonderful holiday keepsake for parents, especially if kids add their own creative touches with color.
