About the Activities

The activity pages are ideal for whole group, small group, independent work, and homework. Each week’s pages can be photocopied into individual packets and given to the students.

Þ Cover Page: Each week of high frequency words has its own cover page. The cover page can be used if the activities are photocopied into a weekly packet.

Þ High Frequency Words: The students write each word three times neatly on the lines.

Þ Alphabetical Order: The students write the words in alphabetical order. The students can use the alphabet strip on the page to help them order the words before writing them.

To use the alphabet strip, the students highlight the first letter in each word.

· For example: for. The students highlight the “f” on the alphabet strip. The students do this for each word.

· Then the students look at the alphabet strip and find the first highlighted letter and write the matching word.

Þ Bingo: There are eight bingo cards and calling cards. Photocopy the bingo cards and cut them apart. Give each student a bingo card. Cut apart the calling cards and shuffle them. Call each word and the students can either color the matching word or cover it with a small counter. The first student to get three-in-a-row wins the game.

The bingo calling cards can also be used as flashcards by the students or placed

in a word wall or pocket chart for reference by the students.

Þ Crossword Puzzle: The students use the high frequency words to complete the Crossword Puzzle.

Þ Word Search: The students find and color each high frequency word in the Word Search.

Þ Proofreading: The students find and circle the ten misspelled high frequency word in each story. The students then correctly rewrite the story on the lines.

Þ Writing: The students use at least five of the high frequency words in a paragraph on a specific topic.
