Do you teach Wonders Reading for First Grade OR are you looking for a way to actively engage your students in rigorous practice and application of skills during independent structures? Then this product is for you!
Everything you need to compliment the 2016/2017 Wonders Workstation Cards for the first 2 weeks of Unit 1! These activity sheets and foldables help students practice and apply skills from First Grade standards. This product has greatly improved my independent practice activities for my First Graders, and I know it will for you too! That’s why I’m letting you sample the first 2 weeks of my activity sheets and foldables for FREE, so you can see how much it can help your students and independent structures succeed!
McGraw-Hill suggests using a blank piece of paper to complete the card activities. However, I have found my students are more engaged and produce higher-quality work with a structured sheet.
Using these sheets, your students will:
*Build on their background knowledge
*Practice and apply word skills
*Collaborate with their peers in appropriate, non-distracting ways
*Grow confident as readers and writers
This product includes:
*Schedule for when to use each activity card/sheet (recommended use/order by McGraw-Hill)

How I use the cards:
*I select the card(s) the students use each day based off the workstation card schedule
*Students focus on 1-2 workstation card(s) a day during independent work time
*I explain directions & model sheet activities
*We may “collaborate” as a class (generate a list/possible answers, turn-and-talk, share out) or students collaborate quietly with a peer during independent time
*Students complete the activity sheet during independent time while I teach small groups
*Students complete Daily 5 activities or Wonders iPads activities when finished
Sample of how I use the cards during the week:
Day 1: Science/Social Studies card (help build on weekly essential question)
Day 2: Reading/Writing Card
Day 3: Phonics Card
Day 4: Reading/Writing Card (we may do a challenging sheet together on the document camera)
Day 5: No Card
How to help students be successful using the activity sheets:
*Read the directions to the kids
*Model how to do each part (do NOT skip this step!!!)
*Have students do a quick turn-and-talk about what they might write about (less sitting and thinking during independent time, and extremely helpful for struggling students)
*Have several students share with the whole group what they might write about
*Super chatty class? Cross out the collaboration activity piece until they can earn it back
*Severely struggling student? Pick 1-2 of the activities on the sheet for them to complete
*Less time to complete activities? Say it’s a “pencil only activity” if there is a coloring opportunity
How the cards are differentiated:
Wonders suggests students complete the activity on the workstation card that correlates to their reading level. For example, on-level readers complete the blue card activity, approaching level readers complete the orange card activity, and beyond level readers complete the green card activity. The activity title on the card corresponds to the activity title on my sheets and foldables. I personally choose to have my students complete ALL the activities! Why?
1. I have found that students can handle the challenge!
2. Students may be more interested in a different group’s designated activity (for example, not all 3 tasks will offer a collaboration activity, a foldable, or a chance to illustrate or write).
3. Some activity sheets do not have 3 activities (some workstation card tasks were repeated, so some activity sheets were condensed).
4. The 3 tasks on the workstation card may take different lengths of time to complete (may be problematic if you are on a specific schedule rotation).
If you are someone who does not have the Workstation Cards from McGraw-Hill, don’t worry! I have included the directions/activities on these activity sheets! The activities are usually organized with the first activity meant for on-level students, the second activity meant for approaching-level students, and the third activity meant for beyond-level students. Pick and choose the ones that are right for your students!
*Please reference workstation cards with how the included, pre-made foldables should be assembled.
I know these aren’t the most glamorous worksheets ever created! They don’t include any eye-catching clipart or borders, but they work to keep students focused and make them better readers and writers! I hope you find the workstation card schedule and activity sheets as helpful as I do!
