Play a Simple Melody
A Bicycle Built for Two
Moody Moon of Summertime
The Glow Worm/Goodnight Ladies (mini-medley)
Happy Birthday (4 versions, each with a different melody instrument)
Starting a middle-level woodwind quintet is no small feat! Second only to finding a time and place to rehearse, having fun and interesting things to play (that is appropriate for their emerging talents) is arguably the greatest factor in their success.
These arrangements are designed for young groups that may be playing 1-to-a-part for the first time. They are relatively short, within a modest range, and with limited rhythmical and chromatic complexity. The melodies, accompaniments, and counter-melodies are distributed throughout the ensemble to challenge and reward every player. In other words, they will be easy for your 2nd and 3rd year students to manage even though they will sound very grown-up.
Instead of programming just one piece per year for your chamber groups (for solo & ensemble festival), challenge them all year long! Consider featuring them on concerts throughout the year, for fund-raising events, school functions, and school board meetings. Also consider using these pieces as quarterly performance assessments.
