If your students struggle with two things - fraction, decimal, and percent conversions and staying awake the day after a holiday or break, then this activity is for you!
Students will choose a word, phrase, or sentence and design the letters to spell it out in the hundredths models. Then they will find the fraction, simplified fraction, decimal, and percent of the boxes used to create each letter. You can hang the papers up as they are, or the students can cut the models out and glue them straight across on sentence strips or construction paper.
I used this the day after Thanksgiving break and asked the students to select words that represented their vacation. The students were a little foggy after the break and all they really wanted to do was talk to each other about what they had done over the holiday. What I wanted was for everyone to be engaged and to do meaningful work. This activity was a win-win! EVERYONE participated, worked cheerfully, helped one another, and created something they were proud of. They also got to chat with one another about the break as they shared their creations. We had fun answers like "I ate and slept," "I love movies," and "I ate honey ham." It was a truly sweet day!
In past years, I had the students select a place they wanted to visit in the world, and that was a huge success too as they poured over atlases and maps. You can have them use any category you like!
