Vocabulary knowledge constantly expands and deepens over time. Vocabulary is acquired incidentally through indirect exposure to words as well as intentionally through explicit instruction.
There are many word-learning strategies, but this activity focuses on multiple word meanings, and using context clues to determine the appropriate definition to fit the particular context. Students will be engaged in using the eye-catching task cards to practice contextual analysis, which involves inferring meaning of an unfamiliar word by scrutinizing the specific types of context clues.
Included in this package is a printable hand-out describing 5 types and examples of context clues to use to determine word meanings. There are 20 multiple-choice cards that provide the students opportunities to encounter unfamiliar words. Each card contains a sentence(s) with a bold word. The students must determine the meaning of the bold word by using context clues. Answer choices contain synonyms and antonyms of the bold words, compelling the students to use context clues strategies.
Instructions: Cut apart each of the multiple choice question tasks cards. Glue onto card stock. Laminate.
Place the cards in a language arts center, use in small groups, play Scoot, or enjoy Around the World.
An answer key is also provided.
