This is a project to do after students have practiced analyzing a text by looking at word choice and syntax. Essentially there are three parts to this assignment. First, they have to analyze one particular line from a text (in this case The Great Gatsby) focusing only on the word choice and syntax. Second, they have to create a piece of art that is a visual representation of their interpretation of the lines. Third, they have to write two explanatory paragraphs that are about the word choice and syntax (very reflective writing).
In this package, there are instructions for the students, three rubrics for the different components of the assignment, a completed student example and a selection of other student examples.
I think this assignment gives students the opportunity to explore and appreciate a text more. It also combines a lot of different skills and interest levels.
