Word Attack Strategies Concept Cards

Who does not want to pull a rabbit out of their hat and
your students will want to also! Snippet will capture your students’
attention and in short time the students will be choosing different, appropriate “word attack” strategies as they read.
~ Each specific concept card introduces one strategy.
~ Concept cards may be used as is or cut out and placed
in a magic hat for dramatic interest.
~ Concept cards may be utilized during whole group instruction,
small group instruction, or tutorial sessions.
~ They may also be used during Guided Reading lessons,
Reader’s Workshop, The Daily Five, and the Cafe
~ Two title cards are enclosed.
Specific word attack strategies introduced:
1- Students look at the illustrations before they read.
2- Students follow the vowel rules.
3- Students sound out the word.
4- Students re-read when the reading doesn’t make sense.
5- Students make a connection between the word they
don’t know and a word that they do.
6- Students self-correct when they know that they have
made a mistake.
7- Students break the unknown word into syllables.
