Word building is an activity that you can start as soon as your students have learned the first few consonant sounds and a short vowel. Young students are thrilled that they are already reading and spelling words! If you are looking for a great first reading activity, this is it.
It is the very first reading exercise I do with my pre-k literacy students. It works great with one student, a small group, or even as a whole class. It's an ideal homeschooling activity. Many of these activities are great for literacy centers.
I do word building with letter magnets. I like the sets with blue consonants and red vowels. I think holding and working with the letter magnets gives the young students extra practice learning the shapes of the different letters. However, you can also do this activity with letter tiles. I've included a set that you can print and use.
I've included picture cards to take you through all the letters/sounds taught at this level. I've also included matching word cards and suggestions for a number of other early CVC learning activities. This is an early Level One activity set.
