The purpose of this activity is to encourage strong word choice. You can use this simple graphic in many ways.
I like to put it on an overhead and write four common words - adjectives and verbs work best - in the word bubbles. (For example, “happy,” “gross,” “good,” “walk,” “upset,” “go”) Students brainstorm stronger word choices independently and then share their best on the overhead.
You can also copy it onto paper and use it in learning centers, or as a warm-up activity. Students could also use it to record and save examples of strong word choice in their writer’s notebooks.
