This packet contains detailed lessons for teaching the trait of Word Choice, as part of the Six +1 Trait Model. The intro lesson uses the picture book Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena as a mentor text (2016 Newbery Award recipient). It includes printables for students to glue into their interactive writer’s notebooks and fill in as they take part in the lesson. Students can also use these as they continue to collect words independently and build a resource for their writing. There is also a reproducible of the book title with the bus stop icon that students could glue into reader’s or writer’s notebooks as they respond to the story, or to keep track of the mentor texts they have studied. To assist you in teaching this lesson, I have included photos of my Interactive Writer’s Notebook to show how I use these with students.
NOTE: When printing the printables for the interactive notebook, be sure to set the printer to LANDSCAPE.
If you are using the Teachers College Reading & Writing Project Writing Units of Study (Calkins, et al.) to guide your instruction, this lesson would help students meet the criteria for Description in the Development section of the narrative checklists and rubric.
