Frederick Douglass: Found Poem and Analytical Essay Project

Use with Frederick Douglass's book "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave

Perfect for Black History Month! Teach history, mood, tone and word choice.

This resource contains all the materials students will need to complete a project that analyzes the development of mood and tone in chapter 1 of Frederick Douglass’s book “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave.” This project contains the materials for 6 separate, Common Core Aligned tasks, and is designed to take one week of class time. This resource for “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” aligns directly to the following Common Core Anchor Standards: R2 (determine central ideas of texts and analyze how they are developed) ,R4 (analyze how specific word choices create meaning and tone), R5 (analyze how portions of the text relate to each other and the text as a whole), W2 (write informative texts), and W3 (write narratives).
This project analyzing the development of mood and tone in chapter 1 of “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave” guides students through the following tasks:
1. Select an excerpt that best exemplifies the overall tone and mood.
2. Choose the words from the excerpt that exemplify the tone.
3. Analyze the mood and tone in the excerpt
4. Create a poem using the words, that mimics the tone of Frederick Douglass
5. Outline an essay analyzing the word choice in their own poem.
6. A final draft of the essay.
This resource is a compressed ZIP file that contains PDF versions of the following:
1. Teacher Directions (1 page)
2. A project cover sheet for students to record their progress on each task and for teachers to record grades. (1 page)
2. Student handouts for each task. (5 pages)
3. A grading rubric for the poem and the essay. (2 pages)
4. An exemplar poem and essay outline. (2 pages)
5. Two BONUS multiple choice practice sets on central idea, mood and tone, with answer keys. (2 pages)

This resource DOES NOT include the text of chapter 1 of “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.” Further, because responses will vary so much, I included exemplar responses and rubrics instead of an answer key. It works best with students who have already read chapter 1 and are familiar with the concepts of mood and tone. I created this resource for 8th graders, but it could be used in early high school as well.
