In this Word Choice Worksheet, show your students how sentences can be just like building blocks, taken apart and reconstructed in new and creative ways. As you take your students through each analysis technique, they’ll see how the types and styles of words authors choose help determine every element of story, from characterization to setting and even plot.
This worksheet is easily paired with any book you’ve got on the curriculum, from fairy tales to argumentative essays. Upon completion, students should have a much better sense of how their words are their tools, and just what they can do with them. This is a great exercise for all students, but works particularly well for students with convoluted, terse or repetitive sentences, as it helps them better grasp the rhythm and flow of sentence styles.
