This is a fun activity that teaches grammar, research, and presentation skills.
"Word Crimes" is a song by "Weird Al" Yankovic. The song is a parody of "Blurred Lines" (2013) by Robin Thicke. The song spoofs misuse of proper English grammar. It mocks online commenters and their neglect of proper grammar within the English language.
After showing the students the music video for "Word Crimes," I gave them this assignment sheet. It lists 14 of the crimes that Weird Al sings about. Students are partnered up, and each set of students is assigned one of the numbers to research. Then, they will create a PowerPoint, and present their research to the class. The second page includes a rubric.
This download includes a PDF version, as well as a Microsoft Word document file, so that you may edit the rubric point values.
