Ever wonder why English is so confusing to learn to spell? The Word Detective manual explains the history of the English Language, which includes many invading countries adding their own language/words to the established English language.
This file is the beginning PowerPoint presentation I made to show students (my ELLs) why some words are short like colors, numbers, and animals, while other words are longer and have a different spelling. This slide show presentation does not go through the entire Neuhaus manual, because the manual and class are much longer, but it is still informative and easy to understand.
The next step to this presentation is teaching students the roots of words the way that spelling-bee champs memorize them (Latin roots, Greek roots, etc..). The Neuhaus manual I got from a workshop, Word Detective: A History of the English Language, does go beyond the history to teach the roots as well.
