Product Description

This resource contains 180 stories to provide enough material for a school year.  Each set of six stories focuses on one word family.  The activities per word family include identifying word family words in the story, comprehension, writing activities, and sight word game practice.

It is our wish that your students enjoy the humor or the information in each of the stories.  We hope you see them rhyming words (words that sound the same, but may be spelled differently), developing and identifying words that rime (have the same ending - word family words), and ask to save their favorite stories into a “book” that they can reread throughout the year.  Most of all - we hope everyone has fun!

Word Families Included: -ab, -ad, -ag, -am, -an, -ap, -ar, -at, -aw, -ay, -ed, -en, -et, -id, -ig, -im, -in, -ip, - it, -ob, -og, -op, -ot, -ow, -/ow/, -ub, -ug, -um, -un, ut.

Set #2 -Different word family endings.

Rationale

Teaching children to read requires them to gain skills in many areas.  This word family resource provides materials for practice in “chunking” parts of words to increase word recognition, fluency and comprehension.

Beginning their instruction in letter-sound recognition and progressing to blending those letter sounds into words, students are then ready to use the “chunks” in words to develop a more extensive sight vocabulary.  Not having to sound out each word allows for greater fluency which translates to better understanding or comprehension of the material.

The research of Wylie & Durrell, (1970) showed that teaching 37 word families allowed children to develop a vocabulary of 500 words.  We have known then, for some time, that teaching words families is a powerful instructional tool.  Another consideration in the development of this resource was to use as many of the 220 Dolch words as possible and appropriate within each story.  It is estimated that 80% of the words found in children’s books are Dolch words.

This resource contains 180 stories to provide enough material for a school year.  Each set of six stories focuses on one word family.  As a suggestion:  Within the materials for one word family, a story might be introduced per day in a group setting while the extra one is sent home for reinforcement or “homework”.

The activities per word family include finding and highlighting the word family words in the story, writing the word that matches a picture, creating both real words and “funny” words using the word family ending.

The word cards can be used for sight word game practice and concentration and/or matching games.

Clipart was chosen to illustrate the main idea of the story or emphasize the meaning of the words chosen for each word family.  The word box on each story page can be used as a quick sight word practice and to identify the bolded word used as a basis for the story.

Each story selection contains two questions that develop comprehension and the meaning of the vocabulary.  Also, some questions ask for critical thinking decisions in selecting an answer.
