This is a center I use in my room all the time. It can be done independently or with a partner. I have several sets in bags for a quick and easy center. The children enjoy using dry erase boards to write the words they made in each family. I also have a recording sheet for children to use. They just pick one family they worked with and write a few words from that family. They can also write a sentence using one of the words and then draw a picture to go with their sentence.
The sets are color coded with a shape on the front of each card. That way, when (not if :)) a lone card is found on the floor, one look tells you and the children which set it belongs to. Some families have more words than others, so there are a few blank cards in some families. These can be used for lost pieces, or just discard them.
