Word work is important for students. When students see patterns in words it helps them learn better. This is an important part of learning and helps students decode words. Playing with word families is an excellent way to get students listening to and focusing on letter sounds.
I have had a great deal of success teaching special needs students with autism, down syndrome, adhd, and learning disabilities to finally see the patterns in words. It has also been used with great success in the general ed classroom. Great RTI program.
Common Core aligned:
RF.K.2a Recognize and produce rhyming words.
RF.K.2b Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words.
RF.K.2c Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words.
RF.K.2d Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.1 (This does not include CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.)
RF.K.2e Add or substitute individual sounds (phonemes) in simple, one-syllable words to make new words.
