This activity is designed to have students work independently or in small groups. The students will create words by placing letters in the space next to the word family. They will sound out the word making sure it is a "real" word and write their words on the answer sheet. Lastly, students will choose 2 words from each word family and write a sentence for each. Although these words are only one syllable they will help students decode longer words too.
I make 4 copies of the activity. I print each on cardstock, place a different color sticker on the back of each set (so the students do not mix their sets up and its easy to sort), and laminate. To store the stations I use bags from the container store. Each color set is put into a 4X6 plastic bag and all the sets are then stored in an 8X10 bag with page one showing through (so I know which set is in the bag). These are sooooo easy to store in your class centers. I change out my Word Work centers often. This allows the students to stay engaged, not get bored and be more independent.
