This literacy word work task is structured to have students segment and blend CVC and CCVC words. Students reveal one letter, sound blend, or whole word at a time. The students will start by removing 1 green icon at a time (and put it in the matching green area below it), to segment each letter sound, while saying the letter sound aloud. Next, the student will remove 1 yellow icon at a time (and put it in the matching yellow area below), to say “sound” chunks or blends. Last the student will reveal the whole word and picture (by putting the red icons below) to blend the sounds together aloud. The picture is used to provide a visual support to help label and identify the word.
Visual supports include the familiar green, yellow, red to represent the “first, next, then” visual that students with autism are commonly familiar with. The “top to bottom” and “left to right” structured teaching approach is used to provided structure
