This activity can be played in a small group or independently.
If played in a small group:
Each student gets a word family board. The cards are then placed face down in the middle. Each student takes a turn choosing a card and reading the word. If the word on the card matches their word family the student gets to keep it and add it to their board. If the word does not match their word family they place it in a discard pile. Once all the cards are used, students flip over the cards from the discard pile and continue playing. The game goes until all the cards have been placed on their boards.
If played independently:
The student lays the boards out on their workspace. Place the cards face down. Chose a card one at a time, read the word and sort onto the correct word family board. Continue until all the cards have been sorted.
When finished with the game, students can complete the follow-up worksheet.
