These books focus on word families. Students practice reading and sounding out the words. They will write the word, match the picture, graph the number of letters, write a sentence, and draw a picture. These small interactive books work perfectly at centers, or as an individual activity.

Interactive Book:
The first three pages I make into an interactive book. I laminate these pages after I cut them apart. You will have 12 pages when you cut them apart. I only make about 4-5 copies, so students can work on them at a center. I keep overhead markers set out at the center. This saves on paper and they can be reused. I hole-punch the top left corner and put them on a binder ring. You can also print one book for each student and have a parent volunteer help put them together.
Students will:
• say the word (or tap each letter and sound it out)
• trace the word
• color it
• write the word neatly
• match the picture to the word
• graph the number of letters in each word
• circle the vowels (practice identifying vowels)
• write a sentence using some of the word family words (some students I have use one word and others I challenge them to use three)
• draw a picture (practice following directions)
Short Word Family Book
The last page in each set I print a copy for each student to make into a book for their book bag. They can read it on their own once we have gone over it, and it gives them practice with the word family words. They can color the books as well. I did provide a color copy of the book as well as black and white.
Here are the individual Word Family Books:
Vowel a
Vowel e
Vowel i
Vowel o
Vowel u
