Words families can be fun because you can use rhyming skills to help teach the concept. The repetition of sounds will help to keep your students interested in the skill. But one of the most important things about word families is that they help emergent readers to recognize patterns in words. Recognizing the patters helps children to decode unfamiliar words.
The word families that are included are: ack, ain, ake, ale, all, ame, an, ank, ap, ash, at, ate, aw, ay, eat, ell, est, ice, ick, ide, ight, ill, ine, ing, ink, ip, it, ite, ock, oke, op, ore, ot, uck, ug, ump, unk.
These fans are great for use with individual children who may need some extra help or for a small group who is just beginning to read! They are also a great addition to guided reading.
You can also customize the fans for differentiation. You may choose to put them together using one-letter, two-letter, or three-letter beginning sounds. I usually begin with the one –letter and add the more difficult blends as time progresses.
