Word Family Flip
Word Family Flip is a fun game that teaches students to manipulate the first sound of a word to make new words. Students are dealt a certain number of letter cards (determined by teacher). One word family card is chosen and put in the middle. The card has a picture of a word in the family. Play begins with the student who has the letter to spell the picture on the card. The student lays the letter in the first box and says the word they spelled. The turn continues clockwise around the group.
Students look at their cards to see if they have a letter that will make a new word. If they do, they lay the letter card on top of the card in the first box and say the new word. If not, they draw a new card. If the new card can be played then the student can lay it on the stack in the first box and say the new word. If not, play continues to the next student. Once the last word is made the next student will draw a word
family card from the stack and begin again. Letter cards can be put back into the draw stack to reuse. The first person to get rid of all their cards is the winner. It’s a fun way to learn rhyming words without students knowing they’re learning!
