These word family foldables are a fun way to provide your young readers with opportunities to decode words by recognizing word patterns and introducing the concepts of singular and plural nouns at the same time. I have successfully used this activity with Kindergarten, first, and second grade students!
Each foldable must be placed with the “s” side up to in order to read the first word. Fold each section in towards the center in order to discover the new word. Ask your students to identify the rhyming portion of each word and generate additional words within that same word family.
English Language Learners can use these to build new vocabulary and to practice generating plural nouns. These can also be used in literacy centers for independent practice.
Please note: This set includes 8 word families, 2 pages each for a total of 16 pages in this package. The following word families are included in this packet: ap, at, ug, in, ock, ake, ate, est.
Important when printing: You must print these foldables one page at a time in order to create a two-sided foldable. Print page 1 first, then turn the paper over on your printer and print page 2. On a new blank sheet, print page 3, turn paper over and print page 4. Repeat the process with pages 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, 15/16. It’s simple!
