Word Family Mysteries will give your students lots of practice making words from 39 of the most common word families:
* 39 pages of word family mysteries (printed 2 per page)
* Ransom letter font and silly detectives
* Print in black and white or color
(Note: The preview will show you all 39 pages of this product!)
I like to print these on cardstock and laminate (or put in a sheet protector) for use with dry-erase marker to save trees. : ) I like to treat the activity like a "mystery" so the kids are given a clue "Something you might do in a chair" (S-it) and once they have "used" a letter they can cross it off of the ransom note list at the bottom of the page. For some reason, the mystery element gets kids very excited about 'cracking the case.'
For more advanced readers, use blends or digraphs. You can also use this activity as a center (one kid can give a clue, and the other writes the word or students make as many words as possible while working independently.)
As an extension, I like to have the kids use a sentence strip to write a "silly" sentence using as many of the words on the list as possible. This is a great way to incorporate writing in to your word family work, and kids appreciate the chance to get creative with their wacky sentences.
p.s. Feedback is very appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to leave a little piece of it should you download this file and enjoy it. Heck, if you don't enjoy it--leave me some feedback so I can improve it! : )
