Get the most out of your word work by focusing on the 37 most common rimes/word families in the English language! Each poster in this pack displays the word chunk along with an anchor picture and an anchor word for your class's reference.
Hang one new word chunk poster each week. Below each poster, hang a strip of paper and, as a class, generate a list of words for each word chunk (family).
Using this as an interactive or shared writing activity is a great way to involve your students in creating word chunk/family word walls they can then reference during writing workshop or journal writing time. Students can also refer to these class-made lists while writing word chunks in the Word Family Student Writing Book
I made to accompany these posters.
I like to keep 4-5 posters and word lists hanging in the room at a time and students can read the word lists as a "Read the Room" center activity.
These posters are different from most word family posters out there because there are lines both before and after the word families. I want my students to understand that word chunks aren't just at the ends of words. This encourages students to start adding endings to their words, such as "s," "es," and "ing."
As more posters and word lists go up, class-made word lists can come down and go home with students, while the word chunk posters can stay up in the room as writing references.
