TEACCH Ice Cream Word Families Matching Activity!
My kids love this activity!
Here are the steps I use to teach rhyming words using this activity.
Students will have a cone with a word family on it and choose rhyming words to build a tall ice cream cone. They can finish their project with some whipped cream and a cherry on top!
To assemble, laminate and cut out the activity. Included is one blank page for you to add your own icons to, but I also included the following word families:
I went to my local hardware store and told them I was working on a project for school and needed paint sticks. They handed me a fistful of them and never charged for them. However, if that is not an option, the Velcro can be attached at the top of each scoop to make the extended ice cream cone.
Introduce just 1 word family so you are teaching word families using errorless teaching. The student will practice correctly until they can demonstrate their knowledge to you with no prompting.
Introduce 1 distractor from another word family. For example, if my student has mastered both –ing and –ink word families, I may have 1 ice cream scoop from each word family and ask the student to correctly match. Sometimes this takes hand over hand prompting, but I fade as soon as I can to no prompting.
When the student can independently discriminate between word families with only one distractor, I would add so you have maybe 3 or 4 of each word family. The student will then show you their understanding by velcroing the correct word families to the cone.
There is a picture for example in the thumbnail images.
