I don't know about you, but I want my students to learn to use high diction. I tell them often no baby words are allowed in my class! :)
To make it fun, we have a Word Funeral at the beginning of every year. Through the use of Madlibs, obituaries, and the Thesaurus Graveyard, I reveal to them the top 10 low diction words I don't want to see in their writing.
The Madlibs help them focus on grammar. The obituaries and Thesaurus Graveyard help them learn to replace low diction words with high diction words.
I've provided you with detailed instructions on how I use it in my classroom, including a link to the sad, funeral music I play as we have our ceremony.
Included are the following:
*10 Full Color Letter Size Tombstones
*10 Full Color Poster Size (18x24) Tombstones
*10 Black & White Letter Size Tombstones
*10 Black & White Poster Size (18x24) Tombstones
*5 Editable Obituaries
*1 Madlib Eulogy
*Words to Bury Sheet
*Guest Book Sign-In Sheet
Let me know if you have questions!
I'd love to see how you use it in your classroom!
