WHAT IS WORD GENERATION?
Word Generation Weekly is a supplementary curricular resource that offers a series
of discussable debatable topics and academic focus words designed to promote students’ academic language and argumentation skills. The program is unique in its cross-disciplinary design, giving teachers of ELA, science, social studies, and math the chance to collaborate on the shared goal of helping students use academic language to articulate their thinking. Series (or individual units) can be used school-wide in grades 6–8.
HOW DOES WORD GENERATION WORK?
A typical Word Generation unit cycle is five days. Day 1, or the Launch Lesson, is usually led by the ELA teacher. During this lesson, students are introduced to and begin building an understanding of five new academic focus words in the context of the week's real-world debate question. Students close read, discuss, and write their way into an initial understanding of the week's issue as they develop the language needed to properly evaluate the evidence on either side.
