Do your students understand how changing one sound is all they need to make a new word? Students begin with a word and change the beginning sound to make a new word, then change the ending sound for another new word. Continuing this process, students will build 5 words using 4 or 5 consonants and 1 vowel.
The selected cvc words are simple and provide the perfect words for beginning to blend sounds to read words.
Use with kindergarten or 1st grade.
This freebie includes 1 “short a” activity card with word tiles and answer key. Print page 4 twice and pages 5 and 6 once and you have all you need for a small group or 8 students.
Subbing Sounds is the perfect activity for developing proficiency with the Common Core CCSS.ELA-Literacy. RF.K.2.e - Add or substitute individual sounds (phonemes) in simple, one-syllable words to make new words.
Only changing one sound at a time, students can readily see how changing just one letter/sound makes a new word. Depending on your students’ skill, you may choose to say the word, have your students build the word, and then write the correct letter on the card. OR place the activity in a literacy center to use independently. If you work with students early in the process to ensure understanding, they will be able to “sub sounds” independently to build new words.
Emphasis on letters/sounds- no pictures provided. This may seem difficult at first but students can build words with just the letters. Developing this skill helps when children are spelling new words when writing independently.
