Word Ladders Substitute Sounds to Make New Words 2
Subbing Sounds is the perfect activity for developing proficiency with the Common Core CCSS.ELA-Literacy RF.K.2.e - Add or substitute individual sounds (phonemes) in simple, one-syllable words to make new words.
Using clues to figure out the word is excellent for developing ELA-Literacy L.K.5 -With guidance and support from adults, explore word relationships and nuances in word meanings.
Students listen to a clue to figure out the missing sound/letter in the first word. After each clue, students change one sound/letter to make a new word.
The selected words are simple and provide the perfect words for beginning to blend sounds to read words.
Only changing one sound/letter at a time, students readily see how changing just one sound/letter makes a new word.
Depending on your students’ skill, you may choose to read the clues OR place the activity in a literacy center to use independently if they can read the clues.
Emphasis is on sounds/letters and listening to the clues- no pictures provided. Developing this skill helps children spell new words when writing independently.
