Word ladders are a great way for young students to practice spelling words that follow a given pattern. I chose vowel teams as that is a big focus at the end of 1st grade and in 2nd grade. The students have to solve the words using clues which helps them to understand and apply dictionary definitions. I wanted something different than Timothy Rasinski's Word Ladder books as they switch between long and short vowel sounds.
Directions: Begin at the bottom of the word ladder. Read the clues to solve the mystery words. Apply phonics to spell each word. Read the words up and down the ladder when completed for fluency.
Vowel teams covered: ai-ay, igh-~y, ow-ow, ue-ew, long and
short oo, ee-ea, oi-oy, ou-ow
