Unit Descriptions:

• Unit 1: Prefixes
In the Prefixes Unit, students learn about and apply the Word Parts Strategy to unknown prefixed words they encounter in short stories. Ten prefixes are taught: un-, dis-, re-, mis-, over-, pre-, fore-,in-, im-, and non-. The unit contains 5 lessons.

• Unit 2: Suffixes
Using the Word Parts Strategy with Suffixed Words
In the Suffixes Unit, students review the Word Parts Strategy and then apply it to unknown suffixed words they encounter in short stories. Seven suffixes are taught: -ful, -less, -able, -al, -ly, -er, and -or. The unit contains 5 lessons. Because students work with both prefixed and suffixed words in the last lesson, it is recommended that students complete the Prefixes Unit before doing the Suffixes Unit.

• Unit 3: Context, Part I
This unit introduces students to the Context Strategy and three types of context clues: clues that mean about the same as the unknown word, clues that mean the opposite of the unknown word, and general clues that give a hint about the meaning of the unknown word. Students read short stories and use the first two types of clues to infer the meanings of unknown words. The unit contains 5 lessons.

• Unit 4: Context, Part II
This unit is a continuation of Unit 3. The first lesson recaps the Context Strategy and the three types of clues. In Lessons 2-5, students primarily use general clues to infer the meanings of words they don't know, although they also use clues that mean about the same as the unknown word and clues that mean the opposite of the unknown word.

• Unit 5: Dictionary
In this unit, students receive instruction about the Dictionary Strategy, which emphasizes the importance of reading all of the definitions and then choosing the best definition that fits the context of the unknown word. The unit contains 3 lessons.

• Unit 6: Combined Strategy
In this unit, students learn how to use the Word Parts, Context, and Dictionary Strategies together. After being introduced to the Combined Strategy, students are asked to choose and apply the most appropriate strategy for the situation. The unit contains 5 lessons.

• Unit 7: Idioms
This unit is intended for ELLs, who face an additional hurdle when learning new words—they have to contend with idioms. (Idioms are phrases having a meaning not deducible from the meanings of the individual words.) This unit contains three games, each progressively more challenging, that teach ELLs to recognize idioms. At the end of the unit, learners are introduced to the Idioms Strategy.

• Unit 8: Cognates
This unit teaches Spanish-speaking ELLs the Cognates Strategy. (Cognates are words from two languages that have a similar spelling, pronunciation, and meaning.) Students learn to leverage their knowledge of Spanish to infer the meanings of unknown words they encounter in English. The unit contains three games, each progressively more challenging.
