Help your students as they read more rigorous texts and face more challenging tests in today’s world.
This unit focuses on “academic” language. While it does not include all of the academic words a 2nd or 3rd grader might need, it includes words that are frequently used when directions are given. Hopefully, frequent use of these words will help students feel less intimidated when they see them on paper or on standardized tests.
( Words introduced and reviewed:
respond, response, opinion, point of view, compare and contrast,
evidence, data conclude, conclusion, perspective, opinion, understandable, analysis, analyze, conclusion, conclude, accurately, accurate, respond, contend, restate, contention )
Although these are difficult words, I find that my students can understand and use them, but they do need practice with them. I try to to use them on a regular basis so that they get used to hearing them but I also teach many of them as vocabulary words with written practice.
There are several types of activities included to help students become familiar with academic language.
“find the word within the word” to help determine meaning
“re-write the sentence”
fill in the appropriate words
discussion cards for “pair and share” or small group work
“Hints” to help students find the word meaning
These lessons are designed to supplement regular classroom instruction and should be able to be completed in about 20 minutes or in small group lessons. Some activities introduce a word and others review word meaning and use. There is no order to the lessons and they could be used throughout the year.
