Fun Student Dictionary Activity!
>The workbook ends with an activity called Student Dictionary. The final project is great to put in the school or classroom library- dictionaries made by S!
>The activity is very flexible time-wise; depending on teacher requirements, the activity can be done from an hour or multiple class periods.
>In essence, a S (or pairs of S) create (typically silly and with a fair bit of flexibility) words using prefixes, root words, suffixes, and usually one real word.
Example 1: hyperpizzaous Meaning: Excessively full of pizza.
Example 2: semiectosnowflakesism Meaning: The belief that it's snowing half-sized snowflakes.
<> Extension activity: When the S dictionaries are complete, have the "authors" who made it write a page of fiction using 10 of their made-up words. Then, give the writing to another student/small group to read. Will readers need to use the authors' dictionary to find meanings of the made-up words, or, will S be able to figure out meanings of those words based on their knowledge of the Latin prefixes, roots, and suffixes they learned in this resource?
